Canvas general operating case with side flaps that fold inward to cover the instruments inside; fabric loops inside hold the instruments in place and black outlines indicate which instrument goes in which loop; case is secured with webbing and metal buckles while two metal boxes of instruments are held in place inside the case with fabric loops and snaps; instruments held in fabric loops are as follows: probe (a), nasal applicator (b), non-traumatic vessel clamp (c), dressing forceps (d), phymosis forceps (e), dressing forceps (f), intestinal grasping forceps (g), Bozeman dressing forceps (h), chisel (i), curved preparation scissors (j), haemostat (k), towel clamp (l), needle holder (m), raspatory (n), bone curette (o), bone lever (p), Alexander gouge (q), Haberer abdominal spatula (r-s), surgical scissors (t), haemostat (u-v), dissecting forceps (w), gouge forceps (x), abdominal retractor (y), bandage scissors (z), bone holding forceps (aa), mallet (bb), rib shears (cc), trephine (dd), Saterlee amputation saw (ff); Farabeuf bone holding forceps (gg); fabric loops also hold a hinged oval-shaped chrome case containing an aspirator set (fa-fl) and a hinged rectangular hinged German silver case with rounded corners containing a glass syringe (ga), hypodermic needles (gb-gf) and two medication vials: coedine phosphate (gg) and trinitrin (gh); small pocket with flap in the front interior of the case holds a cardboard box containing four hand-blown glass tubes of catgut No. 1 in sterile solution (ca-cd); the two boxes held in place by snaps open by two fold-out leaves at the top which meet in the centre, one box holds: eye spud (aa), six scalpels (ab-ag), aneurism needle (ah), straight razor (ai), ear hook and spoon (aj), trocar (ak), Catlin knife (al) and the other box holds: five Gigli wire saws (ba), male catheter (bb), three bone drills (bc-be), three Murphy buttons (bf-bh), two handles for Gigli wire saws (bi-bj), two Wyeth pins (bk-bl), plaster knife (bm), trachea tube (bn), obturator for trachea tube (bo), handle for bone drill (bp);both of these boxes have names and images of the instruments engraved in the bases; also contained loose in the kit: a strip of flannel holding approximately fifty surgical needles of various shapes and sizes (d-da) and a two-piece cardboard box containing two circular hanks of dry catgut, each secured with red twine (e-eb); unrolled with flaps open the case measures 159.0 cm x 62.3 cm; unrolled with flaps closed the case measures 159.0 cm x 38.2 cm; rolled and strapped shut the case measures 38.9 cm x 28.8 cm x 14.6 cm; some instruments are missing and some are not original to the case.

Research Facts
Dr. Robert Morley Harvie (b. 1893) joined the Royal Canadian Medical Corps while still a medical student in 1915. He served for 15 months with the No. 4 Canadian General Hospital at Salonika, returned to the University of Toronto to complete his course and then returned to the RCAMC in 1917, serving in France until the end of World War I. He also served in World War II as the head of Basingstoke Neurological and Plastic Surgery Hospital in England.
