Provenance
Acquired from the Academy of Medicine; source: Dr. W. W. H. Rudd of Toronto.
From the effects of the donor's father, Dr. M. S. K. Rudd, who had a hospital on St. Clair Avenue in Toronto, Ontario.
Used to feed infants who cannot get enough nutrition by bottle or breast-feeding such as those with cleft palette or unable to suck. See University of Michigan Health System website link in Reference Comments.
A long plastic catheter tube would have been attached to the nozzle end, and inserted into the infant's nose for feeding; the funnel would have been held upright above the infant's head to allow the liquid to flow down by gravity. There would have been a glass plunger at the end of the cylinder to control the amount of liquid being pushed through.
