Bakelite vaginal speculum has standard "duckbill" design; some of the component hardware appears to be aluminum; speculum has been designed for right-hand use (based on the position of the thumb lever and adjusting screw); opening at the posterior end of the examination blades is adjustable; the posterior aperture is adjusted via a sliding aluminum level; adjunct to this is the thumb-lever for adjusting the anterior opening between the blades; part of this thumb-lever consists of an aluminum screw that can be set to hold the blades apart for hands-free use.

Dr. Sturgeon graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in 1930; he was in private practice from 1931 to 1940, at which time he joined the RCAF as a medical officer; in 1945, he went into Public Health in Welland, Ont., where he was Medical Officer of Health until his retirement in 1973.
