Research Facts
Identified as aquatint #81, the print is of Bethlehem Hospital as it appeared after 1735; on the left is the eastern wing for male incurables and on the right is the western wing for female incurables; the wings were erected between 1725 and 1736 on the site of the original airing courts; the derivation of the term "Bedlam" comes from "Bethlehem." Accepted by the Academy of Medicine on March 4, 1981.
