Research Facts
Used to prevent pregnancy. Cup shaped bowl that covers the cervix without being held by the cervix (unlike a cervical cap). The control loop was designed for ease of removal and to prevent lateral rotation of the device while it is in use. The function of the valve is to vent air during insertion to ensure the device stays in place. Studies suggest that the failure rate of the device was lower when used with spermicide.
Production of Lea's shield was discontinued in 2008.
