Dilator is a metal forceps-type instrument; rounded handles curve downwards and are corrugated on the outside; at apex of this curve is a gauge consisting of: a slightly curved piece of metal, flat on two sides with measurement markings on top and sharp ribs on the opposing two sides; a round convex disk with a hole in the middle whose threads travel the sharp ribs; a large screw on the upper side of the left handle which secures this gauge; and an oblong wing nut which travels up and down the gauge's sharp ribs and serves to fix the blades once they are opened; the handles then curve towards each other to join at the pivot, then curve away to form the blades (i.e., left handle = left blade); each handle has a strut, attached to the handle with a wing nut, which arches over the pivot to form part of the opposite blade (i.e., left strut = right blade); one strut is on top, the other is on the bottom; the blades are flat on the inside, curved and corrugated on the outside.
