Research Facts
St. Michael's Hospital School of Nursing is an urban Roman Catholic hospital based nursing school in Toronto. It was founded in 1892 by the Sisters of St. Joseph to care for the poor, Beginning with 26 beds, by 1912 there were 300 beds and a five room operating suite. "Between 1892 and 1974, St. Michael's School of Nursing graduated 81 classes, totalling 5,177 graduates. The school was closed in 1974 when nursing education was moved into the province's community college system." Their motto, "Quod Minimis Mihi Fecisti," means "You Did It For Me."
The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, by 1935, was instrumental in developing standards for nursing education and practice. The association protected the title “registered nurse” by making it mandatory to be registered. Nurses had to graduate from nursing school and subsequently be examined again in order to become registered nurses in Ontario. Examinations for the Registered Nurse Certificate began in 1923.
