"NICHOLAS CULPEPER, M.D. // Born Octr. 18 β 1616, Died, Jany 19 β 1654." is printed above the portrait; "RED LION HOUSE, SPITAL FIELDS, // (now standing) // In which Culpeper Lived, Studied & Died. // Published by Alex. Hogg in Paternoster Row Feb. 20 β 1802" printed at bottom, beneath the house; there is also an artist's signature in the lower left corner, but it is illegible.

Research Facts
Dr. Nicholas Culpeper lived from 1616 until 1654; he is most famous for publishing his "Physicall Directory" in 1649, which was the first English translation of the "London Dispensatory," until then only available in Latin.
