Trepanning set in wooden case (a) with velvet interior, handle on top and hook closure with key-hole lock consists of; two trephines (b, c), a wooden trephine handle (d), brush (e), arrowhead perforator (f), key to remove centre pin (g), cranial forceps for removing the circular piece of skull cut by the trephines (h), elevator (i), rounded lenticular (j), and polygonal lenticular (k); wooden handles on most tools (f, i, j, k,); trephines do not have adjustable centering spikes; centre key for securing wooden handles is missing.

Fabric severely faded to a golden yellow colour from original burgundy, except where objects blocked light, small amount of colour remains; wood is worn and scratched; metal with some tarnishing and significant corrosion; ivory developed a yellowish patina where exposed to the light; bristles entirely missing; box does not fully close; wood split on top of case and on handles of (f, i, j); gouge on handle of (k); many tears in fabric; rear right corner of case damaged; fabric on underside severely degraded
