Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; this item was donated by Dr. Brian N. Friesen from Winnipeg, Manitoba; these stools could bend at any angle to facilitate the dentist's work, but they lacked comfort due to the fact that the dentist had to use his own legs to help balance himself; most dental work before the 20th century was done standing up, as it was usually restricted to pulling teeth; 'sit-down' dentistry would not begin until the early 1960s, when tools and dental surgery became more sophisticated
