Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; this type of instrument, with an ebony handle, was being sold in the 19th century, but also as late as the 1910s; described as an "extremely old form" in a 1916 catalogue, this instrument would be used by gouging or scooping out an embedded root
