Dental occlusal instrument for facial measurements; rectangular box (b) with blue paper on inside, grey paper on outside; brown paper lid (a) covered with textured grey paper; silver metal occlusal instrument (c) consists of cylindrical piece of metal with one end curved in a semi-circle; curved nasal rest at top; perpendicular cylindrical chin rest at bottom; adjustable bite rim rest with measurements slides up and down tool; two rectangular pieces of silver metal fused together at a 90-degree angle form chin rest (d); record chart (e), rectangular brown page printed with black and red ink, gives directions for using profile scale and chart; two manufacturer's pamphlets (f, g), white pages printed with black ink and folded into three sections, give product information and directions for using the measurements recorded; clear plastic ruler (h) printed with black and red ink shows millimetres from 1-150; white plastic mold selector (i) printed with black ink with black triangle on hinge, swings to different types of mould.

Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; this item was donated by Dr. Carmen Cavallin from Vancouver, British Columbia; this item was patented in 1934 by James Sorenson; it was used to take accurate occlusal measurements of a patient's face in order to construct dentures; it was based on the idea that there is a fixed law regarding face measurements: the vertical distance from the pupil to the naso spinale is equal to the vertical distance from the centre of the lip line to the bottom of the mandible; the instrument used the patient's pupil as a fixed point of calculation for all measurements; the two rulers are not originally from the same product
