Research Facts
Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; flexible collodion is a mix of pyroxylin (cellulose nitrate), alcohol and ether, and is very inflammable; when dry, it forms a strong, transparent film; it was used as an adhesive to keep wounds closed, hold surgical dressings, and in topical medications; it was also used to make photographic plates in the mid 19th century
