A blue covered book with the title written in gold on the spine; on the first page on the inside of the book is the price of the book written in pencil and the name of an individual who graduated from the Kingston General Hospital nursing school in 1938 written in blue pen; on the next page there is a picture of Florence Nightingale and on the following page is a poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, entitled "SAINT FILOMENA"; the book has a preface and table of contents; it is also divided into 24 chapters and concludes with an index and a list of other books published by W. B. Saunders Company; the book ranges from pages 11 to 337.

Sylvia Burkinshaw was born at Scarborough, Yorkshire, England in 1919 and died on Sunday May 1, 2011 at the Kingston General Hospital. Only daughter of John Frederick and Margaret Burkinshaw. Following graduation as a Registered Nurse at Scarborough Hospital and as a Midwife at Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital London, she served as a Nursing Sister in Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service through World War II. In 1950 she returned to civilian nursing at University College Hospital, London. An International Red Cross Scholarship award enabled her to travel to Canada to continue her health care career. She worked at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto from 1956 to 1961 and at the Kingston General Hospital from 1961 until her retirement in 1984.
Charlotte Aikens was born circa 1868 in Mitchell, Ontario, Canada, and died Oct 20th, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan. She authored several books, volunteered as a nurse during the Spanish-American War, worked at various hospitals in the United States, and was associate editor of “National Hospital Record" and editor of "Trained Nurse and Hospital Review".
