Research Facts
J. R. Watkins Co, Winona, Minn. produced the "Watkins Female Remedy": "19% alcohol and some vegetable extractives" with laxative qualities. It claimed to be a remedy for all female complaints and dis. of women: suppressed menstruation, falling of the womb and deranged menstrual periods, congestion of the ovaries and womb. The company was fined on Dec. 15, 1916 -- for making false and fraudulent claims. From A.J. Gramp, "Nostrums & Quackery", V. II, 1921, p. 181 [see sheet attached to accession form]; however, there is no evidence that this bottle contained "Watkins Female Remedy;" the company made other medications as well.
