Loring's ophthalmoscope set, which consists of two parts; the ophthalmoscope head (a), which has two round discs attached together by a pivot screw; the surface of the posterior disk is smooth, flat metal with a round sight hole cut into the metal and goes through both sides; the back of the disk is a round-shaped mirror with glass covering that is bordered by the rim of the disk that has a milled edge; the top disk has milled outside edges with seven numbered glass lenses and one sight hole set in the metal, equally spaced apart around edge of disk; the posterior disk is fused to a flat metal stem that grooves into a cylindrical shape that is affixed to a separate piece of metal that has a threaded interior at the end; this attaches to a handle (b); the handle is made of a length of solid cylindrical bakelite with a cylindrical metal piece at the top which tapers to a threaded end; the handle has a convex bottom; all pieces fit into a black cloth-covered wooden case (c); the case is rectangular in shape with a lid that has two hinges at the back and a metal clasp at the front; the inside of the case has built-in purple velvet-covered molds that hold the instruments apart from each other; two circular spaces are allotted for condensing lenses (?), which are not included in this set

Condition Remarks
Mirror has slight cracking and corrosion; ophthalmoscope case has major wear and could easily break; lid and bottom of case not fully attached, with bottom side beams of case loosely affixed and cloth and wood coming off case easily; #2: the case is damaged.
