Spinal needle, which consists of four parts that nest together; the outermost part, the cannula (a) consists of a length of hollow metal tubing with a sharp, bevelled tip and an end with a wider-diameter, round open base that tapers to join the cannula; the mandrel (b) fits into the cannula; the mandrel consists of a length of hollow metal tubing with a closed flat tip that has an oval opening cut into the side of the metal just before the tip; the end of the mandrel has a wider-diameter, round open base that tapers to join the mandrel; an adapter (c) fits into the mandrel; the adapter consists of a short length of hollow cylindrical metal; the tip tapers to a small hole and the end is round with a small hole in the centre; a wire (d) fits into all of the above pieces through the adapter; the wire consists of a length of narrow, solid cylindrical wire with a blunt tip and an end bent to form a circle
