(a) wax model (moulage) of the thirteenth and final step in a vaginal hysterectomy on a prolapsed uterus pulled down through the introitus; the model is made of oil-painted beeswax with talc, built up with gauze; the model shows a woman's vagina after the uterus has been separated by pulling it down through the vaginal canal and separating it from the blood supply; at this stage, the opening to the perineal cavity is closed and the vaginal walls are reconstituted; the strings show stitches; the model is painted to depict true colour; (b) model of a vaginal speculum made of silver metal (aluminum?) used to demonstrate the use of the speculum to hold down the perineum during a vaginal hysterectomy; the speculum model was originally attached to the wax model, but has come off.

Provenance
Models made by Marjorie Winslow; they were commissioned as teaching aids by Dr. Robertson of the Queen’s University Faculty of Medicine, who also helped with the anatomical details.
Both models were extremely dirty and dusty; (a) the wax model has two very small chips and no breaks in the wax; there is also a 3 cm crack at the left side at the middle; the surface has a few minor scuff marks and not all of the dirt could be removed with distilled water and cotton swabs; (b) the speculum model shows traces of wax and oil paint on it and is complete, but slightly bent out of shape
