An oval whetstone (a) with removable cover (b) in an open-topped cardboard box (c) along with a blue paper insert (d); the whetstone, or hone, is an oval metal instrument that resembles a pencil sharpener; it has two flat ends; one end has a round hole, a round silver button, and an L-shaped handle with a cylindrical wooden grip; the other, flat, end has two round holes and one groove with circular ends and a circular centrepoint, from which extends a flat, round metal piece; there is an oval opening in one side of the instrument; it reveals the inner components, which consist of a metal bar that emerges from one end to form the flat, round metal piece, and two cylindrical sharpening stones operated by two tooth-and-groove gears that work when the handle is turned; a curved metal cover fits over the oval opening; it is flat with short walls, a curved hinge on one shorter edge and a circular clasp on the other; the hinge fits into an oblong groove in the side of component (a); pieces (a) and (b) fit into the box (c); this is a rectangular cardboard box with a flat bottom, straight sides, and a rectangular top opening; it is held together with five pieces of cloth tape, and has red and black labels on its four sides; insert (d) is found at the bottom of this box, underneath parts (a) and (b); it is a rectangular folded piece of blue paper, entitled "Instructions" (photocopy attached to accession sheet).
"Twinplex // CHICAGO, ILL // MADE IN U.S.A. // FOREIGN PATENTS // ISSUED OR PENDING // MAY - 27 - 1919 // U.S.A. PATENTS" is stamped into the metal one one side of the whetstone; on the cover, "Twinplex" appears in raised metal letters; the printing on the box labels is partially obscured; it reads, "Twin [illeg.] blades // [illeg.] mooth // Twinplex // str [illeg.] for Gil [illeg.] // Probak [illeg.] // Mode [illeg.] // CHIC [illeg.] // Twinplex // [illeg.] per // [illeg] and // [illeg.] Blades // [illeg.] – 100"; the insert is entitled "INSTRUCTIONS" (see attached photocopy)

Condition Remarks
All pieces were dirty and dusty; the box labels were deteriorating; the fabric tape was dark and discoloured; the whetstone showed minor signs of wear, but there were no signs of corrosion, and it was intact; the insert was creased; #2: the box is in bad shape.
