The bronchoscope (a) has a hand piece that is made of solid cylindrical metal; it is four-sided with a dome-like circle at the proximal end; a silver collar separates the handle from the dome; extending from the dome is an eyepiece 5 cm in length mounted with a viewing lens; mid-section has a movable wheel that is the focusing mechanism for the bronchoscope; proximal to the handpiece is a cone-shaped rubber sleeve with a black cord inserted; this cord is divided by white rings in 5 cm increments starting 20 cm from the end; a metal ring forms the tip and has three minute glass lenses at 9 o'clock, 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock and a circular opening at 6 o'clock; on the right side of the dome is an L-shaped lever that moves back and forth with a grooved thumb piece at the end; this controls the flexible tip at the end, enabling the operator to look up and down; at the left side of the dome is a large port with a cylindrical metal hollow insert; a serrated rotating collar at the centre gives way to a flat-type collar with a lip edge; covering this lip is a black rubber cap, centre opening, and a rectangular cut out to the left of the centre opening; at the base of this insert is a hollow metal tube-like structure contoured to run parallel to the cord (b) that supplies the light to the bronchoscope; the end of this tube-like structure is cone-shaped in step-like stages with a fixed wheel-like area with serrated bands; attached to the base of the dome is a black fibre optic cord; a 1.5 cm silver ring separates the cord from the end piece, which is a black metal plug-in with a 1.5 cm silver cuff threaded at proximal end; distal end has a rotating circular band with a 0.5 cm cut out; beyond this area is a solid, rounded metal bar 5.5 cm long, with a centred glass prism; at the base of this metal bar are 7 gold-coloured struts and a silver rivet; this end piece is plugged into a special power source to supply light to the bronchoscope; the bite guard (c) has a solid flat base with concave sides, and a cylindrical open centre piece; the top has a rim with rounded edges; the piece resembles a miniature bowler hat; the cytology brush (d) is a metal-plated wire with a well-worn bristle brush at the distal end; proximal end has an off-white acrylic holder with the wire inserted through it; there are nine cytology brushes (e-m), which are metal-plated wires 109 cm in length; distal ends have 1-cm tiny nylon bristle brushes; the carrying case (n) is a solid flat case with silver trim around the edges, spring locks on right and left sides with a black handle in the centre; inside the case, the base and lid have very thick inserts of high-density foam and cut outs to accomodate the instrument for transportation purposes.
