A wooden case (o) closed with a key that has white string holds a brass monocular microscope (a) with three lens mounts on a cylindrical barrel mounted on a horseshoe-shaped metal base; maker's marks impressed on front of barrel; features include condensor and diaphragm and coarse and fine focus; nine extra attachments, lenses, and lens covers; parts are: three eyepieces, x10, x6, x8 (b-d), four brass lens holders, x10, x30, x60, and oil immersion x100 Ap. 1.30 (e-h); oil immersion lens in (h) x100 Ap. 1.30 (i); replacement mechanism for coarse focus (j); table of magnifications in German (k); three smoked glass filters (l-n) .

Dr. R.D. Lane was a graduate of U of T in 1909; he bought the microscope second hand; it was used by his son, Dr. R.G. Lane, during World War II when he was a Royal Navy surgeon in the Mediterranean Fleet on the famous antiaircraft "C" class ship, the "Cairo."
